Wisconsin Ops Gather in Milwaukee Print E-mail
wamo_pic.jpgThe Wisconsin Amusement & Music Operators (WAMO) continued to live up to its billing as one of the premier industry state groups by conducting one of the largest and most lively annual gatherings in the trade this week. The June 10-11 WAMO Conference included a strong turnout among its 115 operators at the event held at the Hilton City Center in downtown Milwaukee, WI.

Among the highlights were a special, two-day Tech Training session led by Randy Fromm, an exhibition program featuring some 22 firms and a fun-filled group outing to nearby Miller Park for a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game.

Speakers on the program included Legislative Counsel Tony Driessen, who recapped issues affecting the membership, including the recently-enacted statewide smoking ban; Chris McSwain of A.H. Entertainers, Inc., who talked about the impact and ways to prepare for the smoking ban -- from his recent experience with such a ban in Illinois; and AMOA President Russ Mawdsley, who discussed national trends affecting the industry and previewed this fall's AMOA Expo in Las Vegas.

WAMO President Mary Lavine, who is entering her second, one-year term in the position, along with Executive Director Maxine O'Brien were recognized for their efforts in organizing and implementing a first-class event for WAMO members and their families. Fueled by a solid, active membership and a strong league system that annually produces large, well-run pool and dart tournaments (the latter claimed by WAMO officials to attract the largest number of players in the world), the annual meeting -- including an abundance of food and beverages and special events -- continues to be provided to members and guests free of charge.

Pool Party Show Stopper Print E-mail
ImageDid you know that 2009 marks the 120th anniversary of the jukebox? AMOA will be helping celebrate the milestone throughout the year. One of the ways we will call attention to this achievement is during this year's Expo.

At the annual Opening Gala Reception on the Pooldeck of the Las Vegas Hilton on Thursday, September 24, AMOA will sponsor a performance by Sonny Turner, former lead singer of the Platters.

Sonny joined the group at age 19 and helped bring the Platters back on the pop charts during the 1960s with such hits as "I Love You 1,000 Times;" "With This Ring;" and "Washed Ashore." As well, he re-recorded the group's classics such as "Only You;" "The Great Pretender;" and "The Magic Touch."

Taking a trip down memory lane and being part of the 120th anniversary of the jukebox celebration...just one more reason to be part of the September 24-26, 2009 AMOA International Expo in Las Vegas.
