Thirty Years Ago in Our History
395As AMOA marks its 60th anniversary, we harken back to June 1978--at the mid-point in our current evolution as an organization.

According to the Location newsletter, the association's leadership traveled to Washington, D.C. to communicate--in "very blunt terms," that the U.S. Copyright Royalty Tribunal (CRT) should not be entitled to members' location lists.

Their strong, united, passionate presentation prevailed, and as a result, operators have never had to submit location customer rosters to the music licensing authorities.

Participating in the hearing in Washington, D.C. with the CRT were, left to right in the accompanying photo: AMOA First Vice President Wayne E. Hesch; President Don Van Brackel; Garland B. Garrett, Sr., Immediate Past President; and Nicholas Allen, AMOA Legal Counsel.

Don't Delay. First 50 Signups get Free Websites

If you are an AMOA member who will be attending this year's September 10-12 AMOA Expo in Las Vegas, you qualify for this terrific offer.

From 2-3:15 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, there will be a special seminar conducted by former AMOA President Jim Pietrangelo on AMOA's newest member service.

The first 50 who sign up for the session and are interested in having a site generated for their company will have the $50 development fee waived and receive a website for their company--for FREE. The only cost will be a $100 renewal/maintenance fee that will be applied on the first anniversary of the member's website "going live."

This new offering represents significant savings--and therefore real value--for AMOA members, and for the "lucky 50" who will have their sites developed for free is just icing on the cake.

To sign up for the session, simply do so via email to: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or call 800-937-2662.

Of course, you don't have to wait until Expo to secure an AMOA-produced site for your company. Email or call us today and we'll get your site up and running without delay so that your firm is tapping on all of the powerful benefits available with this technology.

Ruling On Currency Bias Could Cost Industry

Last week, the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that U.S. paper currency discriminates against the blind. In a 2-1 decision, the Circuit Court held:

  • That individuals who are visually impaired cannot meaningfully distinguish between various denominations "unless they purchase expensive electronic equipment;"
  • That this dependence is a "denial of meaningful access" under the Rehabilitation Act; and
  • That the U.S. government did not demonstrate that changing the currency would impose "an unreasonable burden."

Currently, the government has not decided on whether or not to pursue its options for an appeal. Procedurally, it could request a re-hearing of the case by the entire, 12-person D.C. Circuit, or file an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court.

381A group of more than 30 coin-op pros endured record- setting temperatures as they gathered Friday, May 16 for the annual spring meeting of the Oregon Amusement & Music Operators Association (OAMOA) at the Eastmoreland Golf Course in Portland, OR.

AMOA President Lloyd Williamson, whose Minnesota cabin is still thawing out from a harsh Midwest winter, cited a more than 50 degree difference between his home and the unusually warm Pacific Northwest.

According to OAMOA President Jerry Johnston, AMOA's Williamson displayed his political tact by visiting with OAMOA members, regardless of whether they were Ducks or Beavers.
