Presidential Introspection on How a Game Influrenced Him
Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots — but you have to play the ball where it lies.
— Bobby Jones
In this month's "Hail to the Chief" column published in RePlay Magazine, editor Steve White conducted an insightful question and answer interview with AMOA President Andy Shaffer that focused not on industry controversies or association issues, but rather, the impact the game of golf has had the personal and professional lives of both Steve and Andy.
Here's a few excerpts:
Andy: "... The sport of golf has taught me more about how to walk through this life than probably any other activity."
Andy: "I learned so much when my dad first started taking me to the course — simple things like shaking hands, looking people in the eye, remembering people's names. These are things that you really need to know in business."
Andy: "... On the course, and in my work, I focus on letting bad shots or mistakes go and moving on to the next opportunity. Moving on after a bad round or a bad shot and learning to accept my failings, lowering my expectations, all of that has spilled over from the golf course to the board room. I think it's all about approaching golf and life with humility."
Steve: "Camaraderie is also a huge part of the game. When I think about the strong relationships I have with certain people in this industry, many of them were formed over a round of golf at a trade show, distributor meeting or state association event."
